Our farm was first documented in 1363 and has been closely connected with our family for centuries. Our family history spans 21 generations and continues to shape the Oberrautnerhof to this day.

Today, we, Florian and Judith Schmid, personally run the estate. We work hands-on in the vineyards and cellar and spend time with our guests. This direct connection shapes both our daily work and the atmosphere of the farm. We are especially pleased that many of our guests value this personal side of our winery – for us, it is a wonderful affirmation of the path we have chosen.

Rooted in one of South Tyrol’s historic Lagrein areas

Our winery is located in the traditional wine-growing area of Gries in Bolzano, renowned for centuries as a home of outstanding Lagrein wines. This indigenous grape variety has also been part of our family history for many generations.

For us, Lagrein represents what gives a wine lasting value: a clear sense of origin, vineyards suited to the variety and careful, hands-on work. Our aim is to produce distinctive South Tyrolean wines that express where they come from while retaining a character of their own.

Tradition and the future go hand in hand

Alongside what has evolved over generations, we consciously look at how our approach to winegrowing can continue to develop. With Souvignier Gris, we cultivate a PIWI grape variety whose natural resistance allows us to significantly reduce the need for plant protection treatments.

For us, this is not a passing trend, but a considered decision in favour of future-oriented viticulture. While Lagrein represents our historical roots, Souvignier Gris reflects our responsibility towards the generations to come.

A personal approach

We have consciously chosen to remain a small, family-run winery. This also means that visitors will not find standardised programmes here, but personal insights into our everyday work. Many of our guests particularly appreciate this direct encounter – conversations about wine, insights into our history and the relaxed, personal atmosphere of our tastings.

Today, you can experience this for yourself by staying in our holiday apartments, joining one of our cellar tours or taking part in a wine tasting in Bolzano. We want our winery to be a place where wine, history and hospitality naturally come together.

The origins of our wine estate reach deep into the Middle Ages, with documented records tracing back to the year 1363. Over generations, the estate has been carefully preserved and cultivated, reflecting the enduring winegrowing tradition of Bolzano-Gries. Today, Schmid Oberrautner stands as a family-run winery rooted in history and defined by continuity, craftsmanship, and a profound connection to its terroir.
