Wines Schmid Oberrautner
Our Wines from Bolzano
South Tyrolean origins, family history and our signature
As a family-run winery in Bolzano, we have been producing distinctive South Tyrolean wines with a clear sense of place for generations. From around five hectares of vineyards, we produce approximately 40,000 bottles each year – from Lagrein and St. Magdalener to Burgundy varieties and selected white wines.
Our work combines tradition with evolution: the classic grape varieties of South Tyrol – first and foremost Lagrein from Gries – alongside new approaches in the vineyard. One of these is Souvignier Gris, a robust PIWI variety that requires significantly fewer plant-protection treatments and opens up new possibilities for us both in the vineyard and in the cellar.
Our wines are divided into four lines, each expressing a different facet of our work: Klassik, Villa Schmid, Riserva and SPUR. They stand for origin, evolution, time and our personal signature.
We deliberately keep the introduction to each wine concise. More detailed information on origin, vinification and ageing can be found in the respective technical sheet.
For further information or personal advice, winemaker Florian Schmid will be happy to assist you.
Klassik
Origin in Bolzano’s historic vineyards
The Klassik line is the foundation of our range. It brings together distinctive South Tyrolean wines from the traditional wine-growing areas around Bolzano – first and foremost Lagrein from Gries and St. Magdalener. These wines express a clear sense of origin and varietal character, with vibrant fruit and an inviting drinkability.

Villa Schmid
Selection and family history
The Villa Schmid line is dedicated to Katharina and Anton Schmid, who played an important role in shaping our winery around 1900. During this period, they built Villa Schmid and opened the house to guests from different countries. Among them were members of the Russian nobility who travelled to South Tyrol at the time. Hospitality thus became part of our family history early on. Today, we continue this tradition with our holiday apartments at the winery.
Villa Schmid also stands for development in our winemaking. For this line, we carefully select batches of grapes that offer greater structure and depth. In the cellar, each wine is given the time and type of ageing that best suits its character. Depending on the wine, this may include ageing in oak, always with the aim of supporting its development without masking the fruit or its identity.
The result is a range of distinctive wines with structure, elegance and ageing potential. They build on our classic line while deliberately taking their development a step further.

Villa Schmid Sparkling Wine
Method: traditional bottle fermentation
Ageing: at least 3 years on the lees
Our house sparkling wine has a story of its own. Originally created for our former wine bar, it quickly became a favourite with our guests. Continued demand encouraged us to keep producing it, and over the years it has become a permanent part of our range.
We produce it in collaboration with a fellow winery that has the specialist equipment required for traditional bottle fermentation. The sparkling wine remains on the lees there for at least three years before being disgorged.
Apple and pineapple shape the nose, accompanied by further notes of ripe fruit. On the palate it is creamy and rounded, with a fine mousse and a soft, harmonious finish.
Villa Schmid Souvignier gris
Grape variety: Souvignier Gris (PIWI)
Ageing: stainless steel and partly in seasoned barriques
In the Villa Schmid line, we present a more complex interpretation of Souvignier Gris. This robust PIWI variety opens up new possibilities in the vineyard while also offering considerable scope for different approaches in the cellar. After one day of skin contact, the must is drawn off the skins and continues to ferment without further skin contact. Ageing takes place in stainless steel and partly in seasoned barriques. This keeps the fruit at the forefront, while the oak adds structure, depth and a subtle roundness. A distinctive Souvignier Gris combining freshness and fruit with greater structure and complexity.
Pinot Noir Villa Schmid
Grape variety: Pinot Noir
Ageing: oak, partly in barriques
Our Villa Schmid Pinot Noir combines structure with the elegance and delicate fruit characteristic of this variety. Cherry and red berries define the nose, accompanied by subtle spicy notes. The fruit remains clear and expressive on the palate, supported by fine tannins and a balanced structure.
After being harvested by hand, the grapes are fermented in stainless steel. The wine is then aged in oak, partly in American oak barriques. The measured use of oak adds depth and spice without overshadowing the fruit.
Lagrein Villa Schmid
Grape variety: Lagrein
Ageing: oak casks and partly in barriques
The Villa Schmid Lagrein is our more developed interpretation of this indigenous South Tyrolean grape variety. After fermentation on the skins in stainless steel, the wine is aged in oak casks and partly in barriques. The measured use of oak adds structure and depth without masking the distinctive character of Lagrein.
Deep ruby red with violet reflections, it combines aromas of violets and dark forest berries with subtle notes of cinnamon and vanilla. On the palate it is powerful yet balanced, with juicy fruit, well-integrated tannins and a long, spicy finish.
Riserva
Time, maturity and evolution
Our Lagrein Riserva is produced only in selected vintages from particularly high-quality grapes grown in Gries, the historic home of Lagrein. Time is the defining element of this line: extended ageing in oak, followed by further maturation in the bottle, allows the wine to develop structure, depth and complexity.
The Riserva represents our most ambitious interpretation of Lagrein. Power and concentration are balanced by elegance and maturity, creating a wine designed to evolve over many years.

Lagrein Gries Riserva Anton
Grape variety: Lagrein
Ageing: oak casks and American oak barriques
Our Lagrein Gries Riserva Anton needs time. After being harvested by hand, the grapes are fermented in stainless steel. The wine then matures first in oak casks and subsequently in American oak barriques. Further bottle ageing gives it the time it needs to develop its structure and complexity.
Deep garnet red with violet reflections, the Riserva combines dark fruit with spicy notes of chocolate and leather. Powerful and concentrated on the palate, with complex aromas, a pronounced structure and a long, spicy finish.
Also available in special formats: Magnum 1.5 l and 0.375 l.
SPUR
Craftsmanship, experimentation and new paths
The SPUR line bears the personal signature of winemaker Florian Schmid. Here, there is deliberately more room to experiment, observe and evolve. Traditional winemaking craftsmanship meets a willingness to question established approaches and explore different expressions of each grape variety.
Extended skin contact is a defining element of the SPUR wines. This approach draws on an old principle of winemaking while opening up new possibilities for structure, aroma and character. Souvignier Gris is particularly exciting for us in this context. This robust PIWI variety represents new approaches in the vineyard and demonstrates in the cellar just how versatile it can be.
SPUR therefore brings together experience and experimentation. These are wines shaped not by a fixed formula, but by Florian’s personal exploration of grape variety, ageing and vintage.

Gewürztraminer SPUR
Grape variety: Gewürztraminer
Vinification and ageing: extended skin contact, spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts and ageing on the fine lees
Our SPUR Gewürztraminer comes from an exceptionally steep vineyard that is worked almost entirely by hand. In the cellar, we deliberately take a different approach from that used for a classic Gewürztraminer.
The wine remains in extended contact with the skins and ferments spontaneously with the indigenous yeasts naturally present on the grapes. It then spends several months on the fine lees. Extended skin contact adds structure and depth, giving the pronounced aromatics of Gewürztraminer a fine tannic counterpoint.
The result is a distinctive Orange Wine that combines the variety’s aromatic intensity with spice, structure and a character all its own. The current vintage is sold out. The new vintage is expected to be available from spring 2027.
Souvignier gris SPUR
Grape variety: Souvignier Gris (PIWI)
Vinification and ageing: three weeks of skin contact, 500-litre tonneaux and seven months on the fine lees
The SPUR Souvignier Gris is our most uncompromising interpretation of this robust PIWI variety. The grapes grow on steep slopes and are harvested by hand. In the cellar, the wine remains in contact with the skins for three weeks, developing its intense aromatics, structure and fine tannic character.
It is then aged in 500-litre tonneaux and spends seven months on the fine lees. The result is a complex Orange Wine with intense fruit, exotic notes, spice and a distinctive structure. A wine with a character all its own, showing the potential of Souvignier Gris beyond classic white-wine vinification.
The current vintage has been sold out since September 2026. The grapes for the new vintage have already been harvested, and we are looking forward to following its development in the cellar.
